Nature and the City: What Good is Urban Conservation? [1]

There's a new energy across the United States about recapturing nature in cities, but can these efforts rebuild biodiversity? Leading scientists, authors, and urban conservationists discuss the science behind and promise for today’s urban conservation efforts. The third installment of The New York Academy of Sciences' and The Nature Conservancy's four-part series Discourses on Nature and Society.

Feds Try To Nudge 100 "Great Outdoors" Projects Toward Completion [6]

The chosen include 24 improving recreational access to rivers and waterways; 23 to construct new trails or improve recreation sites; 20 to create and enhance urban parks; 13 to conserve significant landscapes; and 11 to establish new national wildlife refuges; national park units, etc.

BLM Releases Supplement to Draft PEIS for Large-Scale Solar [9]

The agency says the remaining 17 sites covering ~285,000 acres in six states have the best solar gain and energy transmission traits, the fewest conflicts with environmental, cultural, and historic resources, and the best compatibility with each state's efforts. Public meetings commence Nov 30 and a 90-day public comment period ends Jan. 27, 2012. A variance process could be used to approve additional solar development elsewhere.

Access to Environmental Info Will Be an Issue at Rio+20 [14]

In June 2012, the nations of the world will convene in Rio de Janiero for the 20th anniversary of the landmark 1992 Rio Conference on Environment and Development that set the stage for a number of important treaties, including the Montreal Protocol to protect the ozone layer and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

NAHJ Panel: Galápagos: Challenges for the Evolution of Journalism in the Islands Darwin Made Famous [19]

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists is convening a panel in Miami, during SEJ's 21st Annual Conference, on the Galápagos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site standing at a critical crossroad. This panel of Latino journalists, including residents of the archipelago, will explore the need to create professional and uncensored media outlets and help Galapagueños become better informed about what’s at stake. Open to SEJ conference attendees and NAHJ members only.
