SEJournal News: Environmental Justice Writer To Launch Column; New Editors Join [22]

Veteran environmental justice reporter and co-founder of The Uproot Project Yessenia Funes has signed on with SEJournal to inaugurate the publication’s new environmental justice column. Funes joins the masthead this spring and expects to publish her first quarterly column this summer. 2023 Gathering Goes Big in Boise [24]

The Society of Environmental Journalists’ annual conference is back to Boise, two-and-a-half years after the first attempt to meet in the mountainous Northwestern state was sidetracked by the COVID pandemic. Co-chairs Tom Michael and Christy George outline the rich schedule of plenaries, panels, tours and other events that are drawing record interest to the April 19-23 program.

SEJ Panel Gauges Issues in the Works in the U.S. West [30]

SEJournal Fills Associate Editor Slot, Expands Feature Content [56]

SEJournal has a new face  — that of just-hired Associate Editor Frances Backhouse, a long-standing member of the Society of Environmental Journalists, and a veteran freelancer and author based in Canada. Backhouse will work with the SEJournal’s staff and volunteer editor team to bring in new features from volunteer contributors with journalistic and environmental expertise to share. Reconciling the Divide — How To Report Environment and Religion Together [58]

New thinking and narratives are needed to solve complex environmental challenges like the climate crisis. But for journalists, the ongoing split between religion and environment beats hampers that effort. It’s a reality environmental journalist Meera Subramanian knows from conversations at her own kitchen table. So she helped organize a recent Society of Environmental Journalists’ webinar to explore closing the gap.
